Bequests/Living Legacies

Why is a Will Important?

Creating a will is one of the most thoughtful and compassionate things you can do for your loved ones. It provides them with clear guidance about your wishes, easing their burden during an already difficult time. Even if you don’t have many possessions, specifying how you want them distributed and how you’d like to be remembered ensures your legacy is honoured in the way you choose. Writing a will is simpler than many people think, and many solicitors offer free will kits to help you get started.

How Your Gift Can Make a Difference

For over 65 years, the Foundation has been dedicated to funding innovative health and medical research into some of the most devastating diseases, including cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. We invest in translational research—work that leads to real-world treatments and improved care for those who need it most.

We take our responsibility as stewards of your generosity seriously. Every dollar is spent wisely, with careful investment strategies that ensure the greatest impact for the research community.

By supporting talented young researchers and helping them establish their careers here in New Zealand, we are investing in the future of healthcare. These are the minds that will one day fill our hospitals, caring for patients with expertise, dedication, and a relentless drive to find better answers. Your legacy could be part of shaping that future—one that brings hope, healing, and life-changing discoveries to Canterbury and beyond.

Can I Specify How My Gift Will Be Used?

Absolutely. If there’s an area of medical research that holds special meaning for you—perhaps because a loved one has been affected by a particular condition—you are welcome to specify how you’d like your gift to be used. Your generosity can directly support the breakthroughs that matter most to you.

We encourage you to speak with us if you have something specific in mind. That way, we can ensure your wishes are honoured in the best way possible.

Or, if you’d prefer to entrust us with the decision, we would be deeply grateful for your faith in us. Your gift will be directed where it’s needed most, helping to drive vital research that could change lives.
If you’re unsure, just reach out. One of our advisors would be more than happy to visit you and discuss your options with care and compassion.

Leaving a Gift in Your Will

There are several ways you can leave a lasting legacy with the Foundation:

  • Nominated Sum – You can leave a set amount of money or a specific valuable item to support our cause.
  • Residual Estate - After taking care of your loved ones, you can choose to leave the remainder of your estate to CMRF, ensuring your impact continues for generations.
  • Non-Cash Assets - Your generosity doesn’t have to come in the form of cash. You may wish to leave property, jewellery, artwork, or even a vehicle to help further our mission.

However you choose to give, your kindness will make a difference. Thank you for considering a legacy of hope, healing and discovery.

If you are in doubt about the wording of your will with regard to leaving a bequest, call us on 03 353 1243, or email health@cmrf.org.nz.
